80-20 Concept

A few years ago, I volunteered for missionary service in my church. While there I learned from another missionary what he called the, "80/20 concept". Perhaps you've already heard of it. An example that this missionary used was, "80% of the missionaries do 20% of the work, and 20% of the missionaries do 80% of the work." This also applies in a work setting. 80% of employees do 20% of the work. It applies to sports teams, in group projects, and countless other things. Here's another one: 80% of people only use 20% of their time wisely, while 20% use 80% of their time wisely. So the question of the day is...... In this business, which of the percentages are you? Are you part of the 20% that does most of the work or are you part of the 80% that mostly sit around and let the other 20 % do it all? Are you the type of person that uses 80% or 20% of your time carefully?
Here are some points to help you figure it out:

- What are your results? How much success are you having in your business and your goals? If you're not having the success you wanted, evaluate yourself. Are you using 80% of your time trying to figure out how you're going to fill in the remaining 20%? Or are you actually using 80% sensibly?

- Pay close attention to how you spend your day. Keep a specific log of how much time you spend in each activity. Be honest and write what you actually did. This is a surefire way to figure out which percentile you fit in.

- Are you using your leisure time productively? Let me explain this one. I am constantly trying to gain self-discipline and become more productive (I'm learning be it very slowly). I find that when I don't use my work time efficiently, I feel guilty for taking a break because I feel like my work time was my leisure time. The more productive I am, the more I can enjoy my time off, which in turn gives me the energy I need to go back to work again.

I understand that the percentages are not always going to come out to an even 80/20%, but the principle still applies. Now decide- which one are you and which do you want to be?
